Carrier DNA Screening

Carrier DNA Screening

Carrier DNA screening is a genetic test that is used to determine if someone is a carrier of a gene for a specific genetic disorder. The test is often performed on couples before they decide to have children, especially if they have a family history of genetic disorders. In the test, DNA samples are taken from the couple and analyzed for genetic disorders that can be inherited by their offspring.

Carrier DNA screening can provide information about the likelihood of a genetic disorder occurring in the couple’s offspring and help the couple in making decisions about their next steps in their efforts to have a healthy child.

If the test results show that one or both of the partners are carriers of a genetic disorder, then the couple may consider using assisted reproductive technology (ART) such as PGT-A or PGT-M to increase the chances of success in a pregnancy program. The couple may also choose to consult with a genetic counselor to determine the risk of a genetic disorder occurring in their offspring and the available treatment options.
