7 Causes of Hypogonadism You Need to Know

Hypogonadism is a fertility disorder that can affect both women and men. This disease is also known as a gonadal deficiency, which can result in decreased sex drive. Signs that can appear are infertility and the absence of menstruation in women. So what are the causes of hypogonadism? Here is the full review.

Causes of Hypogonadism

Below are factors that can cause a person to experience hypogonadism, which is as follows:

1. Genetics

The first cause of primary hypogonadism is genetic. One example is Turner syndrome. Launching the Mayo Clinic, Turner syndrome is a condition that can only affect women. When one of the X chromosomes (sex chromosomes) is missing or partially missing. This syndrome can cause medical and developmental problems, including height, failure of the ovaries to develop and heart defects.

2. Undescended Testes (Cryptorchismus)

Cryptorchidism is a cause of hypogonadism in men. The testes are the male sex organs that produce sperm and hormones. Generally, the testicles form in a man’s abdomen and descend into his scrotum during fetal development.

Usually, this condition clears up on its own in the first few months of life. However, if it doesn’t heal by one year, a surgical option is available to make the testicles descend, namely the ‘orchiopexy’ procedure. This is done to lower the testicles in the correct position by making a small incision in the groin.

3. Hemochromatosis

Next up is hemochromatosis, which is a condition in which the body has too much iron. Various health problems can arise if the body cannot eliminate excess iron. Besides causing hypogonadism, the iron buildup can cause damage to tissues and organs.

Excess iron can be found in the following:

  • Heart
  • Heart
  • Skin
  • Pancreas
  • joints
  • Pituitary

Some of the symptoms of hemochromatosis include fatigue, weight loss, reduced sex drive, and joint pain.

4. HIV

The next cause is HIV, which attacks the immune system. HIV can be transmitted through bodily fluids, including blood, semen, vaginal and rectal fluids, and breast milk.

Without further treatment, HIV can develop into AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). When a person has AIDS, the body’s immune system cannot fight off diseases, infections and other conditions.

5. Exposure to Radiation

Any overexposure can cause hypogonadism in both women and men. High doses of radiation can cause various symptoms, such as:

  • Nauseous
  • Weak
  • Falling hair
  • Faint
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever

In addition to radiation that can make a person experience hypogonadism, radiation can increase the risk of cancer. This is because radiation can cause cell abnormalities, both temporary and permanent.

6. Liver Disease

There are different types of liver disease and their conditions. One of them is hepatitis, which is caused by a virus. In addition to viruses, they can be affected by drug consumption or drinking too much alcohol. One of the symptoms that can arise is jaundice (yellow skin).

7. Autoimmune Disease

Another cause of hypogonadism is an autoimmune disease. An example is Addison’s disease. Your adrenal glands are on top of your kidneys, producing many hormones your body needs to function normally.

This autoimmune disease can occur when the adrenal cortex is damaged so that the adrenal glands cannot produce cortisol and aldosterone steroid hormones.

So, that’s the discussion about the seven causes of hypogonadism in men. Sex hormones are needed so that husband and wife can have children and for household happiness. For those who experience hypogonadism, immediately consult a doctor for the best solution. Hopefully, it’s useful.
