This process was initiated by Prof. Dr Sudraji Sumapraja, SpOG (K), who earned the title “Father of Indonesian IVF” and one of the doctors who handled the first IVF program in Indonesia.
After knowing the history of the IVF program and not being curious about the process, come on, now we find out what and how the IVF process occurs.
IVF Process
IVF is a baby that results from the fertilization process carried out by sperm to eggs in the laboratory, aka in vitro fertilization (IVF). This process is very helpful for husbands and wives who have problems with fertility and are difficult to get children and are expected to be an option for you and your partner.
How long does the IVF process take? This process will take about 1.5-2 months and can add up depending on your body’s health and ability to respond to the drugs given. The following are the processes and examples, and pictures of IVF.
1. Ovulation Induction
The first process of IVF is the induction of ovulation. You will be given a variety of drugs that have their respective functions, such as:
- LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) these drugs function to stimulate the ovaries and will be given alone or together
- hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a drug that functions for egg maturation)
- Progesterone hormone supplement is useful for preparing the uterine wall as a place for embryos to attach
- Other medicines prevent the egg from leaving the ovary too quickly.
2. Egg Picking
The next IVF process is egg retrieval or Ovum Pick Up (OPU). This process takes about 34-36 hours after the last hormone injection before ovulation.
In addition to taking eggs, on the same day, sperm is usually taken from the husband. This process can be done by masturbating, or if the husband is not in the same city, it can be frozen beforehand, or there is an operation if the husband cannot expel normally.
3. Fertilization
Entering the next process, namely fertilization. The best sperm that has been selected will fertilize one egg in a tube containing a certain medium. Fertilization will take about 15-20 hours and will be cultured for 3-5 days until it becomes a healthy embryo and is ready to be transferred into the uterus.
4. Waiting for Results
The last IVF program process is waiting for the results. You cannot be declared pregnant after the embryo is successfully transferred, but you must wait for 1-2 weeks.
The doctor will ensure that you are pregnant and will prescribe medication or uterine booster injections to help grow and maintain the embryo so that it remains healthy and becomes a fetus.
To make this program successful, doctors recommend patients do daily activities as usual and without thinking too much about the results of IVF that have been done. It is expected not to trigger and reduce the stress affecting the IVF process.
The success rate for the first IVF program you did was indeed not 100% successful in Indonesia. It could be the retrieval of eggs or fertilization which causes failure. In addition, there are also several factors, such as:
- Egg condition
- Age
- The place where you and your partner do the program
A complicated process like the one above looks like it’s very painful. But, is IVF a pain for you? Let’s find out the answer below.
Does it Hurt During the IVF Process?
Do you feel pain during the first IVF process? The answer is that it depends on your physical condition. So, make sure you are physically and mentally ready for the IVF program.
Always check and diligently consult with the relevant doctor if it is confirmed that the pregnancy is successful so that the doctor can provide the right action and monitor the development of the fetus.
These are the processes that couples have to go through to carry out this IVF program. Always consider carefully before deciding and take this action so that it can be as successful as the first IVF program in Indonesia. Everything must have benefits, as well as IVF. This process has several benefits, as follows.
IVF Benefits
Couples who are considered not to have fertility problems can do IVF programs. Why? Because several benefits exist.
This condition will make it easier for couples who want to have children without having to have sex or really can’t have relationships because of certain things. Here are some of the benefits, such as:
1. Infectious Disease
The first benefit is not transmitting infectious diseases due to sexual intercourse. Some viruses, such as HIV, are the virus that causes Hepatitis B and C.
2. Preventing Genetic Disease
During the embryo examination, the doctor will select a healthy embryo before being transferred into the uterus so that the baby born will be protected from genetic diseases.
3. Long-distance marriage couple
Sperm that got frozen beforehand is very convenient for couples living in different cities and countries. This process makes it easier for you and your partner to have a baby without having to meet and have sex because of the distance that separates them.
One more thing you must know and understand, namely the cost of this process. Complicated processes and adequate equipment cost a lot of money. How much does this program cost?
IVF Process Fee
After knowing the process from upstream to downstream in this program, it would be nice for you and your partner to know how much the IVF process costs. Hospitals and clinics in this modern era are very competent in carrying out this program, so you and your partner don’t have to worry anymore.
Hospitals with all the appropriate technology and facilities are considered the main choice for IVF programs. But, of course, the price is not low because the process is long and the facilities are guaranteed. The costs required range from Rp. 30 million – Rp. 70 million.
In addition to hospitals, clinics can be an option because the estimated price and quality are also quite competitive with hospitals, which are around: Rp. 30 million-Rp. 60 million. The prices offered above, of course, do not include additional costs such as consultation, ultrasound, and other actions that may be required from the IVF program process.
